Acura unveiled more details about its first-ever MDX Type S model late last week, including a price rage for its high-performance SUV. If you’re interested in buying a powerful version of the popular MDX you should know that pricing will kick off in the high-$60,000 range but the car maker stopped short of actually giving us an exact number.
So, what is the Acura MDX Type S actually? It’s the most powerful, best handing and most luxurious SUV ever made by Acura. It is also a confirmation of the efforts put into the Type S badge this year by the luxury division of Honda, as it’s the third model launched by the Japanese car maker with this moniker in the last 12 months.

Under the hood you’ll find the same 3-liter turbocharged V6 from the TLX Type S, developing 355 HP and 354 lb-ft of torque. The gearbox will also be shared with the TLX, namely the 10-speed automatic unit that got a rather warm welcome from customers since it was unveiled. The MDX Type S will come with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) that includes torque vectoring as standard.
The system can send up to 70 percent of the engine’s power to the rear axle and 100 percent of it can be directed to either the left or right wheel, depending on the car’s needs. An air suspension with adaptive dampers, a first for the Acura brand will also be offered. Brembo brakes and 21-inch wheels will complete the package.
“The MDX Type S is for people who love to drive,” said Emile Korkor, assistant vice president, Acura National Sales. “It delivers an unmatched combination of thrilling dynamics, premium features and family-friendly accommodations.”
What we’re missing now is an exact price tag. The Acura MDX Type S is definitely looking enticing but it will be the price asked for it that will most likely turn it into a success or not. Deliveries are slated to begin this December so we’ll learn all the details by then.
