The Chevrolet Silverado line-up will be getting a fully-electric version next year. The news was officially confirmed by the bowtie manufacturer as a direct answer to the already insanely popular Ford F-150 Lightning. The overwhelmingly positive response the blue oval pick-up got from the customers forced Chevrolet’s hand.
The new car will be unveiled for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in January as per the announcement. The Silverado EV will be the latest pick-up in an already crowding segment. Models from GMC, Tesla, Rivian and Hummer have also already been announced.
Chevrolet also provided a teaser picture of the upcoming model, showing a top-down view of the Silverado EV with what seems like a fixed glass roof. This would be a new feature on the popular Chevy model but the manufacturer did point out that it may only be available on certain trim levels, most likely as an optional feature.

Just like in the case of its main rival, the F-150, the Silverado EV will also get a number of trims available, some aimed at commercial usage, others fixed on winning over regular customers, for daily driving. Of course, the former option will do away with all the posh features we might think of, most likely including that nice glass roof from the teaser image.
As for the technical side of things, the Silverado EV will use the same Ultium platform that’s used for other GM products, such as the GMC Hummer EV or the Cadillac Lyriq. According to early estimates, GM says that this will allow the Silverado to cover up to 400 miles on a full charge, which, if confirmed, would make the new pick-up more capable than Rivian’s R1T.
Other tricks Chevy might deploy on the upcoming electric pick-up will include a steering rear-axle. That would probably come in very handy, especially in commercial applications. Even though the Silverado EV might be unveiled in January, don’t expect it to reach customers earlier than Q3.
