Subaru Teases Electric STI E-RA Concept, Coming To Tokyo

Subaru is going to attend the Tokyo Auto Salon 2022 with a number of intriguing concept cars, as announced in a press release last week. The STI E-RA Concept will be the most important launch, signaling the start of the performance brand’s electric future, but we’ll also see “STI Performance” variants of the WRX S4, Levorg, and BRZ in concept form.

The STI E-RA Concept is billed as a “research model of carbon-neutral motorsport vehicles,” so don’t hold your breath for a production vehicle anytime soon, as this is most likely a racing car prototype. However, as the teaser suggests, the model will have new design elements such as C-shaped LED headlights positioned on the fenders, a double vented hood, a red STI insignia on the lower part of the front fascia, and a front bumper with a noticeable splitter that might be utilized in future Subaru vehicles. Unfortunately, Subaru was mum on the performance specs so far, but we’re bound to learn all about them once the Tokyo Auto Salon kicks off.

However, Subaru will present three “STI Performance” versions of the WRX S4, Levorg, and BRZ in addition to the new age motorsport concept. The first one was seen in an official photo with new aero components, and the other two will most likely follow the same path. The revised aero features a pink splitter, side sills, and rear bumper extensions, matching mirror caps and STI insignia, as well as a big carbon-fiber rear spoiler.

The bumpers have been slightly altered for a sportier look, and a new set of black rims with performance tires have been installed. We don’t know if there will be any mechanical improvements over the current model, however Subaru did mention a performance muffler, which might add some better airflow to the exhaust gasses and a different sound.

The Levorg STI Performance concept will be built on the Levorg STI Sport R trim, which was just announced. It will have cherry red accents on the extra aero components, as well as a performance muffler and other elements “that will increase the use” of the performance wagon. The BRZ STI Performance concept will include performance pieces painted in the same cherry red tone as the BRZ S grade.

Finally, the Subaru BRZ GT300 2021 race car, which won in its class this year, will be on display at the Subaru stand, where the carmaker is also slated to make announcements about the 2022 motorsport efforts. The winner of this year’s traditional questionnaire prize offered by the organizers at the Tokyo Auto Salon will be going home with a brand new WRX STI Sport R EX.
